Soon I'll sidle south and east, down the Verde River. Before leaving the Prescott area I wanted to mention a marvelous blog, WalkingPrescott.blogspot.com, authored by the notorious 'Granny J,' a retiree 'well into her Social Security years.' She walks around town and finds interesting things to photograph--or rather, she makes them interesting.
She has an odd lifestyle, living in a pile of sticks and bricks for the entire year, and in one town! But it's a lifestyle she's legally entitled to. Her blog is a model for retirees who blog. Just imagine--walking around town, in a motorhead state like Arizona! In the act of satisfying her curiosity about everything in the town of Prescott, she gets quite a bit of exercise.
I prefer her blog to the vast majority of RV blogs, even though the latter have an enormous advantage in finding fresh material compared to Granny J, who doesn't travel much. The RV bloggers think you want to know about the practical minutiae of RV living. Granny J wouldn't.
Let me imitate her a bit. The Prescott library is following the trend of public libraries in installing a cafe. When I saw theirs I came over, with a big smile on my face, just like you'd expect from a guy who likes free camping:
Alas the free coffee, cafe libre en espanol, turned out to be a misspelling of the intended name for the cafe, libro, which means 'book' in Spanish.
Keeping a travel blog is a great benefit to a retiree. We probably hate being a bore in public almost as much as being a fool in public. Thus the blog puts the author under pressure to get out there and do something, find something. Otherwise it would be all too easy to imitate the average sedentary retiree, who learns "to lose and neglect the creeping hours of time." (Shakespeare, As You Like It.)
